Russia threatens US with retaliatory measures to launch missile defense system in Romania

The day after the opening of the US missile defense base in Romania, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a possible response.

According to Putin, the deployment of missile defense in Europe is not protection, but an increase in the “US nuclear strategic potential” on the periphery, and Russia is forced to think about how to stop threats to the country’s national security.

“Recent events indicate that the situation is not getting better. Unfortunately, it is getting worse, I mean now the commissioning of a radar station in Romania as one of the elements of the promising US missile defense system,” Putin said at a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Defense andboron industrial complex.

The Russian leader also noted that the creation of a missile defense system continues, despite the absence of a nuclear threat from Iran.

“A few years ago, all our opponents unanimously said that our partners in the West, Europe and the United States needed a missile defense system to prevent missile and nuclear threats from Iran. Where are these nuclear threats from Iran now? There is none of them. And the creation of a missile defense system continues,” the president said.

As stated in Washington, the first ground-based anti-missile defense base in Eastern Europe is designed to intercept ballistic missiles launched from Iran and North Korea.

According to Putin, Russia will not be drawn into the arms race, but plans to rearm the army will be adjusted according to the threats.

Russia regards US moves as a violation of the provisions of the Treaty on Medium and Short Range Missiles concluded in 1987.

According to the Director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Mikhail Ulyanov, the launchers built in Romania (MK-41) are universal, and can be used not only for antimissiles, but also cruise missiles.

The US European missile defense base is located in the south of the country, on the site of the old Deveselu base of the Romanian Air Force. According to the Pentagon's official newspaper Stars & Stripes, 24 SM-3 anti-missile missiles, Aegis radar and tracking equipment will be on alert at the Romanian base.

May 13 in Poland began construction of the second element of the European US missile defense system. In Redzikovo, it is assumed that the armament of the new modification will be installed, capable of intercepting including intercontinental ballistic missiles.
