Putin threatens with new ballistic missiles

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed hope that Russia's new nuclear missiles will "make those who are accustomed to militaristic and aggressive rhetoric think." The head of state stated this while speaking at the final board meeting of the Russian Ministry of Defense on Tuesday.

Putin claims that the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile has been successfully tested, and the new Avangard hypersonic missile system is already in mass production.

The Russian leader also mentioned the Peresvet laser systems and the Kinzhal hypersonic missile. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu also spoke about it today. According to him, aircraft equipped with these weapons have already completed 89 flights over the Caspian and Black Seas.

In October, at a forum in Sochi, Putin said that Russia is not afraid of conflict with other countries, since its army is equipped with the latest weapons. According to the president, Russia will not be the first to launch a nuclear strike, but is ready to launch one in response. “We, like martyrs, will go to heaven. And they will simply die. Because they won’t even have time to repent,” Putin added.

Addressing the Federal Assembly, President Vladimir Putin said that in Russia appeared cruise missile capable of delivering a warhead to anywhere in the world and not be hit by air defense systems.

It later became known that to illustrate the action of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, Putin’s speech used footage from an 11-year-old computer video depicting a nuclear missile hitting the state of Florida. According to media reports, despite Putin's statements, Sarmat is in the initial stages of testing.

In May, the American television channel CNBC reported that all four tests of the newest Russian nuclear missiles, conducted from November 2017 of the year X to February 2018, ended in failure. The press service of the Kremlin, commenting on these reports, advised journalists to listen to Putin and believe him.

In the US, there is currently no defense infrastructure capable of withstanding the hypersonic weapon developed by Russia and China. This is stated in a report published on Tuesday by the United States Accounts Chamber (Government Accountability Office). From the document, however, it does not follow that the corresponding weapons are already on duty in Russia.

According to the Russian service of the Voice of America, the American media are actively discussing the new report of the US Accounts Chamber.

“China and Russia are working to develop hypersonic weapons because their speed, altitude and maneuverability can bypass most missile defense systems and can be used to enhance the combat capabilities of both conventional and long-range nuclear weapons,” the report says. “At the moment there are no countermeasures against it.”

Earlier this year, the Russian armed forces announced that they had successfully tested a hypersonic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and overcoming an enemy's air defense system.

In his speech on Tuesday, Putin stressed that the new Russian weapons do not have foreign analogues and will ensure the country's security for several decades to come.

The Russian leader also noted that Moscow will have to reply on the planned US withdrawal from the Treaty on the Elimination of Medium and Shorter Missiles concluded in 1987. He also once again firmly rejected Washington’s accusations that Russia was violating the treaty, and, in turn, accused of violating the US treaty.

The Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles was signed by the leaders of the United States and the USSR in December 1987. He was called the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

The document prohibits both countries to use and deploy ballistic and cruise ground-based missiles of medium (1000-5500 km) and short (500-1000 km) range.

Other existing nuclear powers - including China - did not sign the INF.

Washington has repeatedly accused Moscow of violating the provisions of the document due to Russia's development of a ground-based cruise missile 9М729 (SSC-8 according to NATO classification), the range of which, according to the American side, does not comply with the terms of the agreement.

The Russian side, in turn, accuses the United States of deploying launchers for air defense systems in Romania, which can be equipped including medium-range cruise missiles. It is about the Aegis Ashore complex, which took up combat duty at the Deveselu military base in Romania.
