The Pentagon assessed the chances of Russia to destroy the United States

According to the candidate for the post of CENTCOM General Kenneth Mackenzie, Moscow ranks first on the list of Washington’s security threats.

Russia could destroy the United States and China could cause serious damage, both countries posing a threat to America. This statement was made on Tuesday by Lieutenant General Kenneth McKenzie, nominated by US President Donald Trump for the post of head of the Central Command (CENTCOM) of the US Armed Forces (AF), writes TASS.

Speaking at a hearing in the Armed Forces Committee of the Senate of Congress dedicated to the consideration of his candidacy, the military leader answered questions about the situation around Iran. Touching upon the topic of the new edition of the National Defense Strategy published by the United States last winter, the lieutenant general emphasized that the document “identifies 5 main threats to the country.”

“Iran is one of them and is below the threat from Russia, which could destroy the United States, and China, which could seriously injure us,” McKenzie argued.

He again accused Tehran of “malicious activities in the region” that pose a threat to the United States.

Rivalry in Central Asia

Mackenzie added that the United States is engaged in long-term strategic rivalry with Russia and China in Central Asia, and for this, the US military forces need to deploy military bases in the region and use airspace.

"Yes. Great power competition is global in nature - it occurs not only within the borders of the great powers themselves, but also on the periphery, in such competitive spaces as Central Asia,” he said, answering the question of whether he considers Central Asia a region where there is long-term strategic competition between the United States and Russia and China.

“CENTCOM will continue to strengthen the relationships necessary to maintain the access, base capacity and airspace needed to compete with Russia and China, and to support the fight against terrorism,” he added.
