Putin: “Ukrainians, Tatars or Jews” could have interfered in the American elections

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he was not worried about Russia's alleged interference in the US presidential election, because those people were not connected with his government.

In an interview with an American television station NBC Newswhich aired on Saturday, 10 in March, Putin suggested that some of the 13 Russian citizens accused in the United States of interfering in the American elections could be ethnic Russians.

“Maybe they are not even Russians, but Ukrainians, Tatars or Jews, but with Russian citizenship, which also needs to be verified,” he said.

Putin reacted harshly when interviewer Megan Kelly asked if he didn’t justify the intervention mentioned in the indictment last month by special attorney Robert Muller.

"I don't care. They do not represent the interests of the Russian state. And if something bothers you, tell us officially, send us documents confirming it, explain to us what they are specifically accused of. We will then see if they violated Russian law...” Putin responded, according to a Russian-language version of the interview published Saturday by the Kremlin.

Putin said that Russia has neither the tools nor the desire to intervene in the elections. He repeatedly complained during an interview that Washington dismissed Russian initiatives to work together on cybersecurity issues.

“I’m telling you for the third time: we proposed joint work in the field of cyberspace. But the United States refuses to officially work in this direction, only throwing some 13 Russians into the press. Or maybe there are not Russians there, maybe there are Ukrainians, Tatars, Jews, just with Russian citizenship. And even then you need to check, maybe they have dual citizenship or a green card, or maybe the Americans paid them for this work. How do you know? And I don’t know,” he said.

Putin argued that the United States intervenes in Russian elections “all the time,” but “it is impossible for us” to do the same.

“Firstly, we have our own principles, which consist in the fact that we do not allow interference in our internal affairs and do not interfere in others. This is our principle. First. And second, we don’t have that many tools,” he said.

Kelly noted that Putin made the remark that he does not have the tools to thwart the elections in the United States soon after he announced that Russia had developed a new nuclear weapon.

“These are not missiles, this is a completely different field of activity,” Putin replied.
