The proposal of the US Senator to partially lift the sanctions from Russia failed
The initiative of the US Senator Rand Paul to partially lift the sanctions from the Russian deputies failed. His colleagues from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee are casting doubt on the motivation behind this proposal.
An aide to the Committee stated that Paul was the only lawmaker to vote for his amendment, notes Voice of America. The amendment stipulated that the current US sanctions against members of the Federal Assembly of Russia would be lifted if Moscow agreed to lift its own sanctions against some members of Congress.
20 senators who were members of the committee voted against this proposal.
A Kentucky lawmaker visited Moscow several months ago, where he met with Russian lawmakers. During this trip, Rand Paul invited Russian deputies to visit the United States, but many of them are under American sanctions and therefore cannot come to America.
The senators noted that Paul's offer was "resolutely rejected".
“The sanctions were imposed because these State Duma deputies voted to authorize Putin to invade Ukraine and take Crimea. “Nothing has changed here,” emphasized the chairman of the Committee, Republican Senator Bob Corker, in a comment to The Daily Beast.
“The Russian parliament has more than 600 members who are not subject to sanctions and with whom we can meet. Even those who are under sanctions can attend the Munich Security Conference, we can see them there, or in Israel, or anywhere else. Therefore, this proposal was decisively rejected for obvious reasons,” he added.
Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who is now barred from visiting Russia (she was denied a Russian visa last year), called Paul's proposal a "capitulation to Putin's aggression."
Sergio Gore, Paul's chief of staff, said the amendment reflects the senator's belief that "dialogue and diplomacy are vital to world peace."
US sanctions imposed against such key Russian lawmakers:
