US senator proposed to partially remove the sanctions from Russia

US Republican Senator Rand Paul intends to submit an amendment to Congress to allow for the lifting of US sanctions on Russian lawmakers.

An amendment will be made by Paul at the September Senate Committee on Foreign Relations 26. It provides that the current US sanctions against members of the Federal Assembly of Russia will be lifted if Moscow agrees to lift its own sanctions against some members of Congress.

The likelihood that the committee will support this amendment is extremely low, since its members are deeply skeptical of Russia and are not ready to lift the sanctions in exchange for the concession offered by Paul.

Some members of the committee have already stated that they do not intend to support the initiative of Paul.

"Thanks, no. As a senator who fell under Kremlin sanctions, I see absolutely no need for this amendment and am confident that sanctions against the Russian leadership should be tightened, not weakened, ”said Democratic Senator Jean Shahin, who was denied last year Russian visa.

Senator Paul insists on the need to lift the sanctions on Russia since he returned from Moscow in August 2018.

During this trip, which he made without his colleagues, Paul met with Russian officials and handed President Donald Trump a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Later, the White House acknowledged that the letter was written at the insistence of Paul.

“Senator Rand Paul believes that dialogue and diplomacy are vital for world peace. It is important to remember that the US and Russia possess more than 90% of all nuclear weapons. Although there are many issues on which we can disagree, we will not be able to resolve these differences if both parties do not participate in the dialogue, ”said the Deputy Chief of Staff of Senator Sergio Gore.
