US accused Russia of sabotaging sanctions against North Korea

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo criticized Russia's actions, accusing Moscow of actively sabotaging the regime of international sanctions against North Korea. According to him, the sanctions were needed to convince Pyongyang of the need to abandon nuclear weapons, writes Voice of America.

"Russia actively tried to counteract the decisions of the UN Security Council, the work of the committee at the UN, which assesses compliance with the sanctions regime," Pompeo said at a press briefing at the State Department.

On the eve of the United States Permanent Representative to the UN Nikki Haley accused the Russian authorities of trying to make changes to an independent report on violations of the sanctions regime, which is being prepared with the participation of the UN. According to her, Russia pressed on independent researchers to make changes to the report.

“Russia should not be allowed to edit and obstruct independent UN reports on sanctions against North Korea just because they don’t like what they say. Period,” Haley said.

One diplomat, whose name was not disclosed, said that in the amended version of the report there was no mention of how Russian citizens violate the international sanctions regime against North Korea.

Pompeo stated that he hopes that the UN sanctions commission "will publish the original document that they were going to make public and which clearly shows the actions related to sanctions and the violation of the sanctions regime."

At the same time, the US Secretary of State assured that the United States fully complied with the decisions of the UN Security Council. In his opinion, sanctions are the main argument of "President Trump in his efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula."

At the moment, the Russian mission to the UN has not responded to the accusations of the United States.

The UN Security Council will hold an extraordinary meeting on Monday, 17 September. A report submitted by the sanctions committee to the Security Council a few weeks ago said that Pyongyang did not stop its nuclear missile program. Even in the document it was reported that the DPRK violates the regime of export sanctions.

Recall, 13 September, the United States imposed new sanctions against two companies from China and Russia for supporting Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.

21 August, the United States imposed sanctions against two Russian legal entities and six ships of shipping companies that transferred oil to North Korea.

On August 3, the US Treasury announced additional sanctions against North Korea, imposing restrictions on the Russian bank Agrosoyuz, which provided services to North Koreans in circumvention of UN sanctions. The US sanctions strike has collapsed the Russian ruble.

North Korea is under international and US sanctions because of its nuclear program and ballistic missile testing.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia is working on measures against the United States after the introduction of sanctions against Russian companies for helping the DPRK.
