Winner from New York dies after winning the lottery
A resident of New York, who won a million dollars in the lottery, died a week after he announced his winnings, writes ABC News.
At the beginning of 2018, 51-year-old Donald Savastano, originally from Queens, who lived in Sydney, played the New York lottery Merry Millionaire and won 1 a million dollars.
A carpenter by profession, he shared his plans on how to manage lotteries. Most of it was going to postpone for retirement, besides "buy a new truck and go on vacation." Savastano also wanted to visit the doctor, because he could not afford it before.
“He was self-employed,” said Danielle Scott, who works at the store where he bought the winning ticket. “He lived without insurance and felt unwell for some time, and when he received the winnings, he was able to go to the doctor.”
In the hospital, he was diagnosed with fourth stage cancer.
“His friend came and told me that he had lung and brain cancer. That he’s in the hospital and unlikely to come out,” Scott said.
Savastano passed away on Friday, 23 the day after he won the lottery.
“I was hoping the money might save his life,” Scott said.
