The bone is made from the patient’s own fat, grown for 2 weeks and injected into the defect area. In a matter of months, patients recover, and their functionality is fully restored.

This happened to the Israeli Dani Jacobson. Dani, a resident of the kibbutz Mishmar ha-Emek, had his left leg fragmented. After treatment, he was able not only to walk without crutches, but also to play sports.

“My wife and I were riding Segways in Prague, and I crashed into a curb,” says Dani Jacobson. “When I woke up, it turned out that I had a displaced bone fracture in my left leg. The fragments were fixed with a pin. But when the fracture began to heal, the bone began to protrude outward, beyond the skin, and part of it had to be removed. The result was a terrible defect.”

Dani had to walk with a pin in his leg, but when no improvement came and after 2 months, he was offered treatment with a new method. The doctors pumped out a little fat from Dani's body, grew new bone cells from them in the laboratory, and injected directly into the injured bone. 6 weeks after injection, the newly formed bone completely filled the defect.

“Two months after treatment, the leg began to function normally,” says Dani. A year later, I ran half the distance in the Iron Man triathlon competition. This week, the US Federal Drug Administration (FDA) licensed Bonus Biogroup to use a special syringe to inject laboratory-grown bone. This is the first step in obtaining the necessary permits, and it is assumed that the method, which is already used to treat patients in Israel, will be applied worldwide for 3 years.

“No one in the world has yet been able to grow human tissue outside the patient’s body,” says Bonus Biogroup CEO Dr. Shai Meretzky. “For the first time, we were able to grow living, functional tissue that fills bone defects.”

How it works

In a patient with a defect in any skeleton bone, a certain amount of fat is pumped out and transferred to a laboratory. There, tens of thousands of osteocyte progenitor cells (bone cells) are isolated from fat. These cells are grown for 2 weeks and injected into the patient at the site of a bone defect. They create bone tissue in the empty space of the defect, and after a few months the patient’s functionality is fully restored.

Bonus Biogroup is currently conducting clinical trials to restore the bones of the upper and lower jaw under the supervision of the maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Efraim Zur.

The new method, as already mentioned, was used in the treatment of 40 patients. In one of them, as a result of an accident at the construction site, the bones of the hand were crushed. He was given a cell suspension, and after 2 months he was able to return to work.
