The rock that the 30 had propped up on the door for years was a meteorite worth $ 100 000
The 10-kilogram stone, which has been bolstering the door in Michigan for decades, turned out to be a meteorite worth $ 100 000, according to information from Central Michigan University (CMU).
Monu Sirbescu, a professor of geology at the CMU, is constantly asked to investigate a particular stone, considering it a meteorite. But no one ever brought her a real meteorite.
“For 18 years, the answer has been ‘absolutely no,’” Sibeska said.
But that all changed when she was asked to investigate an unusually large piece of debris. He was brought by a man from Michigan who wanted to preserve his anonymity. For 30 years, he used this stone to prop the door.
“I knew right away that this was something special,” Sibeska said.
After testing, she determined that it was a meteorite consisting of 88,5% iron and 11,5% nickel. However, this is not just any space rock. After weighing it, it became clear that it was the sixth largest recorded find in Michigan - and the stone may be worth $100.
“This is the most valuable specimen I have ever examined in my life,” Sibeska said.
According to the double check rule, the fragment was sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, which confirmed that it was a meteorite.
Journey to Earth
Chip arrived on Earth in 1930's, according to its owner, who received it in 1988 when he bought the farm in Edmore, about 30 miles south-west of Mount Pleasant. While staying at the hotel, a man noticed that a piece of rock was propping the door, and asked the farmer what it was.
The farmer told him that it was a meteorite. And he added that the fragment fell on their territory in the 30-s. At night, there was a lot of noise, and in the morning the farmer and his father found a crater and dug up a still warm meteorite.
The new owner lived on the farm for several years, and when he moved, he took a mysterious stone with him. For the past thirty years, he has used it as a door rest.
This year, the man was inspired by the stories of Michigan residents who found and sold pieces of meteorites.
According to CMU, the Smithsonian and Mineral Museum in Maine is considering buying a meteorite for display. If the sale takes place, the man agreed to give 10% of the sale to the university to study the earth sciences and atmosphere.
