The cherry blossoms that have made Washington, D.C., an even more popular tourist destination finally have a worthy competitor on the West Coast - stunning jacarandas are blooming in Southern California, writes Prevention.

Jacaranda trees are not native to the United States—they were brought here by gardeners from Brazil, South Africa and Argentina. Most likely, gardeners were attracted by the incredibly beautiful flowers of this plant.

Trees begin to bloom in late May, reaching peak flowering in the first two weeks of June. And now it is that period.

The first week of June has arrived, and purple and blue flowers have begun to delight residents from Pasadena to Santa Ana, Beverly Hills and Long Beach. Like cherry blossoms, jacaranda trees also shower roads with colorful flowers - their petals fall to the ground and cover sidewalks and streets, creating an even more impressive scenery.

Note that jacaranda trees bloom only in the southern states, such as southern California, Florida and some parts of Texas. In other regions of the United States, they do not survive because of the cold weather.
