Sakura bloom in Washington: when and where to look at 2019

Every year, people from all over the United States go to Washington (DC) to see the spring flowering of sakura.

Edition USA Today found out when these charming trees reached peak flowering in 2019.

According to forecasts by the US National Park Service (NPS), this year the peak of cherry blossom in Washington is expected from 3 to 6 in April.

These dates were announced at a press conference organized by the National Sakura Blossom Festival, which has been held in the US capital for more than 90 years, and this year will be held from March 20 to April 14.

However, according to Mike Liteter from NPS, the accuracy of this forecast is not much higher than the accuracy of the weather forecast for a long period, and as a result, the peak of flowering may fall on other days. Liteterst explained that in some years the forecast was accurate (as in 2015 year), but, for example, in 2018 year, the Service had to revise its forecasts twice.

During the presentation of the festival in Washington, spring mood reigned, as evidenced by the bright costumes of some visitors.

The events of the National Sakura Blossom Festival this year will include the April 13 Parade, the Blossom Bash in The Anthem 5 Music Hall on April with pop star Megan Traynor, as well as many other themed entertainment. A full list of festival events is available at link.

The National Sakura Blossom Festival in Washington, DC, annually attracts 1,5 a million people who want to admire the trees in soft pink color.

The flowering period of sakura is about two weeks (from the first flowering to the shedding of petals from the tree). Thus, every year there is a relatively narrow “window” when you can see trees in full bloom.

You can see the flowering of Japanese cherry in Washington in the city center:

• Tidal pool (Tidal Basin in West Potomac park);
• Park East potomac;
• National Mall.

About three thousand trees donated by the mayor of Tokyo to Washington in 1912 are growing here. Sakura was brought to the city 106 years ago - as a symbol of friendship between Japan and the USA. Then the first two trees near the Tidal Basin were planted by the First Lady Helen Taft and the wife of the Ambassador of Japan, Vizkauntes Chinda.

To get to the center, see, take a picture of sakura and not be disappointed, follow a few simple tips:

1. Forget about personal transport during the festival, otherwise a few hours in traffic jams and irritation are guaranteed.
2. Metro station closest to cherry blossoms Smithsonian, accordingly, it will also be the most crowded. Better get off at the stations L'Enfant Plaza, Federal Triangle, Foggy Bottom and take a little walk.
3. Getting around the city at this time is best by bike - you can to rent;
4. Do not miss the shuttle: its route is from the Thomas Jefferson Memorial along the park East potomac;
5. Remember: early in the morning and late in the evening the Sakura is just as beautiful, but there are much fewer tourists near it;
6. Change your usual routes and visit alternative parks, sakura blooms there too, but less crowded: National Arbotrium, Stanton park or Anacostia Park.
7. And do not forget about restaurants, where at this time there will be a special “cherry” menu.
