Nostalgia in numbers: more than half of Russians regret the collapse of the USSR
More than half of Russians regret the collapse of the USSR. Such conclusions can be drawn from the data of a survey conducted by “Levada Center". The study was timed to coincide with the December anniversary of the signing of the Belovezhskaya Accords. However, according to the survey, only 12% of citizens were in favor of restoring the USSR in its previous form.
When asked if citizens regret the collapse of the USSR, more than half of the citizens (56%) answered in the affirmative. Less than a third of respondents (28%) said they did not regret the breakup of the Union. Last year, 37 said so% of respondents. The rest of this question was difficult to answer.
More than half of those dissatisfied with the collapse of the USSR say that, first of all, they regret the destruction of the economic system. The number of people who regret that “people have lost their sense of belonging to a great power” has decreased (from 56% in 2014 to 43% in November 2016). Also, almost a third of respondents (31%) named among the consequences of the collapse of the USSR “an increase in mutual distrust, bitterness,” and a loss of the feeling that “you are at home everywhere” (30%).
On the question of whether it was possible to avoid the collapse of the USSR, 51% of respondents, like last year, answered positively, 29% say that disintegration was inevitable.
