Despite the war, the Hasidim go to Ukraine for the annual pilgrimage: how they will be protected

For Hasidic pilgrims in Uman, Cherkasy region, before the celebration of the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah, 21 shelters were prepared in case of air raids, reports Hromadske.

Rosh Hashanah is an important Jewish holiday, thousands of Jews annually traveled to Ukraine in Uman on a pilgrimage to the grave of Tzadik Nachman. And even now the war does not stop these people.

It is expected that 10 Hasidic pilgrims will come to Uman for the current celebrations. In past years, 30 to 40 Hasidic pilgrims came to celebrate Rosh Hashanah.

Rosh Hashanah this year will be celebrated from 25 to 27 September. In early September, local authorities reported that pilgrims had already begun to arrive in the city.

Protective Measures

“In Uman, there are 21 simplest shelters that have been converted from basements. There is a special shelter for 2-2,5 thousand people near the place of celebrations,” said Igor Taburets, head of the Cherkasy OVA.

According to him, from September 19 to September 30, an enhanced security regime will operate in Uman, guaranteed by the police, the National Guard, the territorial defense, the Security Service of Ukraine and the State Emergency Service.

Representatives of one of the currents of Judaism - the Bratslav Hasidim - make a pilgrimage to Uman, because the grave of the founder of this trend, Rabbi Nachman from Bratslav, is located in the city. And they do it for the new year according to the Jewish calendar.

The Hasidim consider it their duty to visit at least once in their lives the grave of Tzadik Nachman. They also believe that if they meet the Jewish Rosh Hashanah at his grave, then the next year will be happy for them. In 2021 alone, approximately 30 pilgrims came to the celebration in Uman.
