The boss did not give time off to the mother, in whom the child was in the hospital on a life support system
Crystal Fisher, a gas station manager from Albion, Michigan, asked her boss for time off. The woman wanted to be with her son, who was urgently hospitalized and connected to life support systems. In response, she received a rude rebuke with a direct threat of dismissal. Fisher posted screenshots of this correspondence on social networks.
18-year-old Jason, son of Fisher, was rushed to the hospital after his body temperature jumped to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius), reports New York Post. Doctors have connected a young man to life support systems.
Fisher also has an 14-year-old daughter, whom the woman asked to contact the management and explain that she would not be able to go to work because of her son’s illness. The girl called and asked to replace her mother on Friday, but she heard in response that Fisher should have contacted the boss herself. At the same time, the doctors told the woman that a serious bacterial infection was found in her son and that he should be taken to the hospital at the University of Michigan.
Fisher wrote a message to her boss, whom she called Dawn, that she would not be able to go to work until her child could feel better. What happened next shocked everyone.
“This is not the way we do things, so I accept your dismissal,” was the response. A stunned Fisher wrote in turn: “What should I do if my child is on life support? I never said that I was quitting, have you decided to fire me?”
“If you don’t come to work, you quit,” the boss responded. In response to the mother’s words that this was not about an appointment with the dentist or ophthalmologist, the boss retorted: “That’s not a reason to miss work. I'm not going to tolerate drama. If you don’t show up tomorrow, I’ll assume you’ve quit.”
Fisher asked Dawn what she would do if she were in her place. The manager assured that she would go to work and perform her functions: “Your son is in the best place possible. I have a job to do and that's my priority."
Fisher posted the correspondence on her Facebook page, and her message instantly went viral. The woman was contacted by senior management at Folk Oil's, where she worked, and was allowed to take as many days off as needed. The top manager promised to immediately begin an investigation into the incident. A few days later, the boss who mistreated Fisher was fired. The mother continues to wait and hope that her son will open his eyes and see her nearby.
