Explosion at Ohio plant leaves one dead and at least 13 injured

On February 20, an explosion occurred at a steel plant in Ohio. Molten metal and debris rained down on nearby buildings, killing one person and injuring at least 13. Yahoo.

The explosion sent smoke into the sky, which could be seen for miles around the damaged plant about 24 kilometers southeast of Cleveland.

Explosion of unknown origin at I. Schumann & Co. ironworks. in Bedford attracted firefighters from all over northeast Ohio.

Oakwood Fire Captain Brian DiRocco addressed the media at the scene earlier on Feb. 20, saying 13 people were taken to hospital, many with burns, and another is being treated at the scene.

According to DiRocco, at least one of them was in critical condition, and another was recovered from the rubble. All the victims were at the scene of the incident, the falling debris did not hurt those who worked at neighboring enterprises.

A Cuyahoga County spokeswoman later confirmed that the 46-year-old man had died.

“They were mostly wounded,” DiRocco said. “I’m sure a lot of people who work here were shocked.”

DiRocco said he had looked at the place before and found it safe, except for the fact that it was a foundry.

"You're dealing with molten metal, so there's always danger," he added.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, and the damage to the plant was "significant," the company said.

“We will work with investigators in their search for answers as part of our commitment to Northeast Ohio, where we have been operating for over 100 years,” said I. Schumann and Co., a copper, brass and bronze alloys company.

Matthew Wiggins, owner of the nearby Rose Colored Gaming business, said he heard a massive explosion and that "after a second or two, it sounded like a large amount of debris was hitting the roof."

“Things fell off the walls, fell off the shelves. We went outside and there was something like smoldering stones and molten metal in the yard. Tons and tons of smoke. The fire was blasting out of a building across the street,” Wiggins said.

Another witness, Joe Sarconi, said that the brick wall that surrounded the house had been destroyed.

“The beam flew across the street. Another beam flew across the street and broke our window,” Sarconi said. “Interesting, but terrible.”

The explosion occurred about 112 kilometers northwest of East Palestine, Ohio, where earlier this month a train laden with toxic chemicals derailed, setting off a fire that sent a cloud of smoke over the city and forced thousands of people to evacuate.
