Media: Mexican drug cartel kidnapped 30 Georgian citizens and demands ransom

On March 16, about 30 Georgian citizens who were trying to reach the US border were kidnapped in Mexico. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of $90 thousand, reports CaucasusWatch.

Relatives kidnapped they said that one of the hostages managed to contact his family and submit a ransom demand. He said he was held in the basement with about 120 other hostages. According to available information, among these people were women, although it is unknown whether any of them were abducted children, reports Echo of the Caucasus.

Half of the ransom in the amount of $45 thousand has already been paid for the release of 15 people, and negotiations for the remaining abductees continue.

“I am a prisoner of a drug cartel, I am a victim of human trafficking. We were kidnapped and they are asking for money. There are 30 of us, and they demand 90 thousand... Perhaps they will take our phone away again. Brother, there are 120 of us who were locked in some basement. We are waiting to be pulled out... One man pointed a gun at me and another hit me with the handle of a knife because I tried to speak to them in Spanish. They shouted at me and beat me, I don’t know why,” one of the abducted people wrote in a short text message.

An informed source believes that you should not count on help from local authorities. According to him, Georgian citizens were handed over to the cartel directly by Mexican immigration officials.

“We can say with confidence that both of these parties are acting together. It’s very hard to believe that the police will come there and free these people,” said the informant, who wished to remain anonymous.

First information about kidnapping groups of migrants were disseminated by the Mtavari television company last week. However, on March 18, Foreign Minister Ilya Darchiashvili said that “no one was kidnapped” and the information disseminated by the media was untrue.

“No one except you talks about the kidnapping of Georgians. Do not mislead our citizens, your viewers. Find the strength within yourself, after the spread of incorrect and unfounded information, to come out and say that it is unconfirmed... No one was kidnapped!” – Darchiashvili said addressing reporters.

The woman was allegedly kidnapped between Monterrey, Nuevo Leon state, and Reynosa, Tamaulipas state, while traveling with Mexican acquaintances.

Police did not provide details about how the rescue took place, who the kidnappers were, or whether they were arrested or killed.
