In Mexico, 4 Americans were kidnapped: their car was fired upon, and they were threatened with weapons

4 U.S. citizens who went missing March 3 after being attacked and kidnapped in Matamoros, Mexico, were mistakenly targeted, reports CNN.

The American group was not the intended victim of the attack, according to a US official with knowledge of the investigation.

Shortly after US citizens entered the border town of Matamoros, Mexico on March 3, they were fired on by unidentified gunmen, according to an FBI report in San Antonio. The agency has not identified the victims.

“All four Americans were placed in a vehicle and taken away from the scene by armed men,” the report said.

The source indicated that at this preliminary stage of the investigation, it is not assumed that American citizens were in Mexico for criminal purposes.

A car believed to have been driven by the Americans collided with another vehicle before the victims were driven from the scene at gunpoint. Four US citizens who were crossing the road in a white minivan with North Carolina license plates were abducted on March 3 shortly after crossing the border into Matamoros.

Photographs obtained by CNN show a woman sitting next to three bodies near a white minivan. All the doors of the van were open.

Judging by the photographs, the woman was then loaded into the back of a white pickup truck. As seen in the video, several bodies could be seen on the street next to the pickup truck. One of the militants brings the woman to the pickup truck and forces her to sit on the platform. Meanwhile, his accomplices drag the man along the sidewalk before two other male victims were thrown into the car, reports Dailymail.

The FBI is investigating and has posted a $50 reward for the return of the victims and the arrest of those involved. The FBI said it was cooperating with other federal partners and Mexico's law enforcement agencies in investigating the kidnapping.

Matamoros, a border town of over 500 in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas across from Brownsville, Texas, has been gripped by violence and organized crime since at least the Mexican drug war began in 000. The cartel split into small rival gangs.

For example, on the day of the alleged abductions, police warned parents not to let their children go to school because of two shootings in the city.
