The nurse adopted the girl whom no one visited at the hospital
At the end of each working day, the head of the Massachusetts nursing service came to a newborn who was in the hospital but no one visited her. Some time later, she adopted her.
Gisele was born on 29 pregnancy week in July 2016. She was diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome due to the fact that her own mother used drugs during pregnancy.
The baby was born with a weight of just over 2 pounds (900 g). She developed a hypersensitivity of the oral cavity, as a result of which she refused to eat. She spent three months in the intensive care unit. During this time, no one ever visited the child, with the exception of 45-year-old Smith, who herself recently learned that she cannot do IVF.
Enlisting the support of family and friends, Smith decided to make life easier for Giselle, who was then 9 months.
“When I got the call that the parents had been deprived of their rights to the child, I thought it was great news,” said Smith, who fell in love with the little girl. “That day I felt very sad. But I was really happy. I got it and they lost it."
So, two years after Giselle first came under state custody, Smith legally became her mother.
The woman said that when the judge walked into the room on the day of the adoption, October 18, 2018, he said, “Usually everyone shows respect for the judge. But today I respect you, Liz, because you deserve it. Giving birth is a miracle. But adopting a child is destiny. That’s what brought you two together.”
Giselle began to develop well under the supervision of Smith. Although the baby still eats through the food tube, Smith helped her to start eating some hard foods.
“From the moment I saw her, I felt like I could love and keep this child safe,” Smith said.
