Leaders of the Jewish Federations of North America visited Ukraine: evaluate the results of charitable assistance

In solidarity with the people of Ukraine, twelve leaders Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) arrived in Ukraine to visit war-torn cities and communities, assess the need for humanitarian assistance and see for themselves the results of the charitable activities of the Jewish Federations. This is the first international Jewish mission to Ukraine since the beginning of the war.

During the visit, representatives of partner organizations of the Jewish Federations will inform the mission participants about current problems and the results of joint work. Leaders JFNA will also visit places where Ukrainian Jews, including refugees, receive assistance from the main partners of the Jewish Federations: the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (Joint) and the Jewish Agency for Israel (Joint).

In Lviv, mission participants will visit Hesed Arie, which provides social services, material and medical assistance to needy city residents. With the beginning of the war, “Hesed Aryeh” became the coordination center for the reception of refugees and the distribution of humanitarian aid throughout Ukraine. Chesed Aryeh also has a “Warm House” where local Jews can find shelter and warmth during the harsh winter months, as well as a volunteer center staffed by local Jewish volunteers of all ages.

In Truskavets, Jewish leaders from the United States and Canada will meet with refugees hosted by the Joint at a local hotel, where they are provided with accommodation, food, medicine, psychological and social support, and cultural and educational programs.

In Polyana, the mission will visit a Jewish Agency summer camp for children aged seven to twelve. Also in Western Ukraine, members of the mission will attend a seminar on preparation for repatriation organized by the Jewish Agency, as well as a special training on stress resistance organized for leaders and employees of Chabad communities in Ukraine.

Today Jewish Federations of North America raised more than $90 million to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians.

During the war, the Jewish Federations trained and sent more than 150 Russian-speaking and Ukrainian-speaking volunteers to help Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries. JFNA also plays a leading role in helping and protecting the rights of Ukrainian settlers in the United States.

“Jewish Federations have played a significant role in the relief effort for Ukraine, drawing on the structure of our communities across North America, as well as our extensive experience in raising critical funds, mobilizing volunteers and creating a program to help the migrants,” said David Heller, chairman of the national campaign assistance to Ukraine JFNA. “We are glad to see and hear first-hand that our efforts were able to provide all possible assistance to our Ukrainian brothers and sisters. But the war continues, and our leaders are determined to galvanize their communities in collective fundraising to continue helping Ukraine.”
