Lavrov and Tillerson discussed Ukraine behind a closed door

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met on September 17 on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York.

At the same time, journalists, who were first invited to the meeting, were asked to disperse even before the arrival of US officials at the talks with Lavrov in the Permanent Representation of Russia to the UN, writes DW.

After the meeting, Tillerson left without making any press statements.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters that the topics of the talks between the Russian and US foreign ministers were issues of Syria and Ukraine.

“The parties discussed cooperation on the Syrian crisis and other aspects of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the progress in implementing the Minsk agreements on Ukraine,” Zakharova said.

When asked how the meeting took place, she replied that she was not present in the room where the negotiations were held.

Later, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert issued a press release stating that Tillerson and Lavrov “reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to deconfliction during military operations in Syria, as well as to reduce the level of violence and provide conditions for advancing negotiations to resolve the situation.” in Syria, held in Geneva."
