Chinese zoo accused of using people in costumes instead of bears

The Hangzhou Zoo, China, is being accused of having Malayan bears as people dressed in costumes. Suspicions arose after a video appeared showing one of the bears standing on its hind legs. Guardian.

A video of a Malayan bear standing on its hind legs has gone viral on social media. People have noted that his thin legs and folds of fur make him look like a man playing the part of a bear.

A zoo in eastern China has denied allegations that some of its bears may be people dressed in costumes.

“When it comes to bears, the first thing that comes to mind is their huge figure and amazing strength... But not all bears are hippos and the personification of danger. We Malayan bears are small, the smallest bears in the world,” the zoo said in a statement on behalf of Angela the bear.

A spokesman for the zoo said the animal was real and that such deception was not possible in a public facility. He also noted that at a summer temperature of 40°C, a man in a fur bear costume "will not last more than a few minutes before collapsing to the ground."

A zoo employee said meetings were organized for journalists on July 31 to see the bears.

The Malayan bear, which is about the size of a large dog, stands no more than 1,3 meters tall on its hind legs, compared to 2,8 meters for grizzlies and other species, according to the zoo.
