By 2100, due to rising sea levels, hundreds of American cities will be under water

Scientists estimate that rising sea levels due to climate change may result in hundreds of American cities being flooded in the coming 20-80 years. In the list of risk metropolitan areas such as New York, Boston, San Francisco and Miami.

Organization The Union of Concerned Scientists published a July 12 study that lists cities that are likely to be flooded in the coming decades.

Flooding is understood to mean that “the main part of the city will be flooded with at least 26 once a year, or flooding is equivalent to one flood per week.”

Scientists estimated the possible effect of varying intensity of sea level rise: from very low to very high.

For example, Miami, which already suffers from regular floods and has spent millions of dollars to eliminate their consequences, according to scientists, has not even reached the 10-percentage flood rate compared to what the city expects until the end of the century.

Researchers estimate that, depending on the rate of sea level rise, 15-20 American cities will become chronically flooded in the next 165-180 years; 40 years - about 360 cities; by 2100 - 490-670 cities.

The study emphasizes that rising sea levels mean a sharp increase in the number and intensity of coastal flooding. Most coastal flooding today is caused by man-made sea-level rise.

Cities that are expected to be flooded by the 2035 year are mainly located along the Jersey coast, in some areas of North Carolina and South Louisiana.

By 2060, this list grows to small and big cities in states like Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey.

By the end of the century, 50 cities with more than 100 people 000 people are in the list of cities that will suffer from regular flooding, for example, Boston; Fort Lauderdale and four of the five boroughs of New York. The West Coast will not suffer from floods over the next few decades, but scientists predict that San Francisco and Los Angeles will be considered flooded by 2100 in the year.

But scientists say there is a way out. According to their data, if by the end of the century to slow global warming on 1,5-2 degrees Celsius, then approximately 200-380 of US coastal settlements, including almost 50 major cities, can be saved from flooding.
