Israel passed the law of united Jerusalem, Palestine called it “declaration of war”

On January 2, the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, adopted the law on a unified Jerusalem.

According to the document, for any change in the status of Jerusalem or the transfer of part of the city’s territory under the control of another country or community, even within the framework of future Israeli diplomatic agreements, it will now require the support not of a simple majority, as it was before, (61 deputy), but two-thirds of the Knesset members that is, 80 of 120 deputies, writes TASS.

The law also for the first time since 1967 establishes the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem.

The bill on united Jerusalem was supported by the MP 64, the member of parliament 51 voted against this decision.

The administration of the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, called the decision of the Knesset "tantamount to a declaration of war."

“The vote on the unified Jerusalem law effectively represents a declaration of war on the Palestinian people, their political and religious identity,” said Palestinian Authority spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina.

According to him, in this way Israel “officially announced the end of the so-called peace process and began to implement its dictatorial policies in practice.”

The radical Hamas movement, in response to the Knesset decision, called for strengthening resistance to Israel in the occupied lands - in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The Hamas leadership believes that such actions by the Israeli side should force Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to “cease any security contacts with Tel Aviv and announce the end of the Oslo agreements.”

The Oslo Accords, concluded at the beginning of 1990 between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, imply Israel’s recognition of the Palestine Liberation Organization as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and consent to the activities of the Palestinian National Authority in the occupied territories. According to the same agreements, the Palestinians recognized Israel’s right to exist in peace and security, renounced terrorism and assumed obligations to resolve a bilateral conflict by peaceful means.

Recall 6 December, US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and urged the State Department to begin the process of moving the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

December 18 on this issue held a meeting of the UN Security Council. Then 14 from 15 of the Security Council member countries, including such US allies as Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, France and Ukraine, supported a resolution prohibiting anyone from recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, but United States used the right of veto permanent member.

December 21 held emergency meeting of the UN General Assemblyin which the 128 member countries of the General Assembly from 193 spoke out against Trump's decision.

December 25, following the United States, Guatemala announced the transfer of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Israelis consider Jerusalem their capital. Palestinians insist that the capital of the future Palestinian state should be located in the eastern part of Jerusalem.

Israel declared Jerusalem its capital after the end of the War of Independence in 1949. In 1967, after the Six Day War, he captured East Jerusalem and united it with West, but the UN did not recognize this because of the claims of Palestine, so the city was divided into zones of influence and is considered an occupied territory, and all diplomatic missions of countries that have relations with Israel located mainly in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan and Herzliya.
