UN General Assembly condemns Trump's decision on Jerusalem

December 21 held an extraordinary session of the UN General Assembly on the recognition of US President Donald Trump of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The session was initiated by Turkey and Yemen on behalf of the Arab group and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, reports USA Today.

128 member states opposed Trump’s decision, 9 supported the US declaration (the States themselves, as well as Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Togo and Palau), 35 countries abstained. Russia and Belarus also condemned the decision of the United States, the representative of Ukraine was not at the meeting.

The draft resolution was developed by Egypt, the document calls on the countries of the General Assembly to support the resolution of 1967 of the year, which establishes the separation of Jerusalem between Israel and the Palestinians, since both peoples consider this city the capital. The resolution stated that the future status of the city should be determined during negotiations between the two parties.

Israel insists that a united Jerusalem is the capital of the Israeli state, and the Palestinians want East Jerusalem to become the capital of a future independent Palestinian state.

Only a few countries recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and moved their embassies there, while most other states opened their embassies in Tel Aviv.

The resolution states that any decisions and actions that involve changes The status or demographic composition of Jerusalem is null and void, invalid and should be abolished in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions previously adopted.

On the eve of voting Trump has threatened to cut financial assistance to countries that vote at the General Assembly against his decision on Jerusalem.

An emergency meeting of the General Assembly was convened after the United States vetoed the same document that it voted for at the December X UN Security Council meeting. Then 18 from the Security Council member countries 14, including US allies such as Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, France and Ukraine, supported the resolution, United States used the right of veto permanent member.

It is worth noting that the General Assembly’s vote expresses widespread disapproval of the recognition by the States of Jerusalem of the capital of Israel, but it has little effect on the situation, since it is simply an expression of the opinion of the world community that does not entail any practical consequences.

Recall 6 December, US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and urged the State Department to begin the process of moving the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
