Why Ukraine should open a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem

This week, the Trump administration adopted a global foreign policy initiative: the US embassy will be located in Jerusalem, the de facto capital of Israel. The status of Jerusalem has been considered controversial since 1967, and most countries in the world do not recognize it as the capital of Israel.

Arab states still believe that the time will come and they will be able to get at least part of Jerusalem and the surrounding territories, so the status of the capital is a bargaining chip, one of the parts of the front of confrontation with Israel.

The Trump administration has finally decided to make a breakthrough and clearly define its position in the Middle East - the placement of a superpower embassy means recognition of the capital's de facto status.

This decision caused a sharp consolidation of all anti-American and pro-Arab forces in the UN.

Ukraine did not support the UN resolution recognizing the status of Jerusalem as the capital.

However, Ukraine did not support the UN resolution, which condemns the decision of the US to deploy an embassy in Jerusalem.

These events caused a major crisis and clashes in the Middle East. The security system, of which Washington is the architect, is seriously shaken and is under tremendous pressure.

In my opinion, at the moments of such crises, real allies are manifested.

Recognition of Jerusalem is now no longer a question of relations between Ukraine and Israel. At the moment it is a matter of relations with the United States. And in this situation, it is necessary to declare by all available methods Ukraine’s position in support of America, even if this causes problems in our relations with some Arab countries.

The United States is our strategic ally, which actively influences the transformation processes in Ukraine. US support in the War of Independence is the most consistent and extensive. The United States plays a key role in the NATO system, and integration into this bloc and obtaining the highest possible status of participation in NATO are the main priorities of Ukrainian security and defense policy.

US support is one of the most important factors that will allow in the near future to raise to a higher level Ukrainian-American cooperation, as well as cooperation with NATO.

Trump decisively goes on the escalation of foreign policy crises accumulated over decades. The United States clearly marked the position on the Russian-Ukrainian war, and without any hesitation, they put pressure on Putin.

In my opinion, Ukraine’s non-vote for the anti-American declaration is a wise step.

But, frankly, I would also like organizational decisions.

There are always risks. But ok, let's do without declarations and big words. We are still too weak for our opinion to resonate.

And, let’s say, moving the embassy to Jerusalem is too radical a measure for us at the moment.

But, I believe, if silently moving the consulate of Ukraine to Israel in Jerusalem, this would be a tangible sign of support.
