Avigdor Lieberman: “Israel should reconsider its relations with Turkey”

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman noted that the recognition by the States of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was calmly received in the Arab world, the only country that tried to use this situation to stir up conflict in the region was Turkey.

Therefore, Lieberman believes that Israel should reconsider relations with this country. He stated this in an interview with the channel Rtvi.

Lieberman stressed that Israel has always been clearly articulated, that there can be no compromise on Jerusalem, it is the capital of Israel.

“The fact that President Trump accepted this position and confirmed it is a very important achievement for us. This was one of the most key points. And for the first time, someone in the international community, and this someone is the President of the United States, has unequivocally confirmed our position, and for us this is a great achievement, so, of course, this is a great disappointment for the other side, for the Palestinians,” Lieberman said.

He added that such a decision by Trump is not a gift for Israel, but “recognition of historical facts and recognition of Israel’s right to decide for itself where its capital is.”

According to the Israeli Defense Minister, Arab countries very calmly accepted the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, since they are not interested in quarreling with the United States, and besides, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is not their main problem, they are more concerned about the terrorist organization Islamic State ” and Iran.

At the same time, Lieberman noted that the only state that is trying to use the situation to create problems for Israel and incite a conflict is Turkey, and the harsh statements of the president of this country, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during the “Islamic Summit” confirm this.

“I think we should reconsider relations with Turkey. We are very tied to Turkey economically. I know that the Minister of Energy is very much pushing the idea of ​​a gas pipeline through Turkey. Although, I believe that this will be a big strategic mistake, the valve of our gas pipe will be in the hands of Erdogan. I think we should re-evaluate our entire relationship with Turkey, because we are not pursuing policies that are contrary to our vital interests,” Lieberman said.

According to him, now the threat to Israel from the radical organization Hamas has also increased.

He noted that the Palestinian Authority authorities have blocked funding for the Gaza Strip, which has caused discontent among local residents, since the ruling Hamas region has all tax revenues financial receipts from other countries supporting this radical movement are used for armament, which is why the inhabitants of the region suffer. Lieberman noted that the organization is rapidly losing popularity among Gazans.

I think that within the next few months all the tunnels that exist will be blown up and destroyed by us. This is a purely Israeli development, which has already aroused great interest outside Israel,” Lieberman said.

According to the Israeli Defense Minister, Hamas uses sponsorship funds sent to the Gaza Strip by Iran, Qatar and “other radical financial sources” exclusively for military purposes: to dig tunnels and produce rockets. This causes dissatisfaction with the policies of Hamas in the enclave, which forces it to take active action against Israel.
