US vetoed UN Security Council resolution on Jerusalem

The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution preventing anyone from recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The resolution was initiated by Egypt, the document was supported by 14 from 15 countries represented in the Security Council, reports the publication “NEWS".

For the first time in the last 6 years, the United States has exercised the right of veto. Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN Nikki Haley explained that the veto of resolutions is an extraordinary step in diplomatic practice, but this time it was just such a case.

Haley recalled that in December 2016, the United States abstained in voting on anti-Israel resolution No. 2334 (then the Security Council recognized Israeli settlement activity in Jerusalem as illegal) and more, she said, Washington does not intend to repeat such mistakes.

The representative of the United States emphasized that she did not consider it the UN's competence to decide where a sovereign country should deploy its embassy.

Hayley stressed that Donald Trump’s statement recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel does not contradict international norms and does not constitute an attempt to establish the borders of Jerusalem, which, as stated by the President’s speech, should be discussed by the parties during the negotiations. However, she expressed concern about attempts to twist the essence of the initiative.

Haley called the UN Security Council vote “offensive” and proof that the UN is “doing more harm to the peace process than good.”

She also reminded the Palestinian leadership that the US is helping them more than any other country.

“Have you forgotten about the billions of dollars we transferred to you? Are you accusing us of not being committed to peace? Don’t forget that Americans also have a limit to their patience,” Haley emphasized.

Reacting to the vote on the resolution, Israel's permanent representative to the UN, Daniel Danon, said that "no vote, resolution or debate can change the simple truth that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel."

Recall 6 December, US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and urged the State Department to begin the process of moving the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The UN Security Council December 8 held an emergency meeting about Trump's declaration, but then no final documents were accepted, although the Security Council ’14 members strongly opposed the American decision.
