Hillary Clinton's name can be removed from the curriculum.
Texas social science students no longer need to know who Hillary Clinton is, Barry Goldwater and Helen Keller.
The Texas Department of Education wants to remove this content from the compulsory curriculum so that teachers can go deeper into other specific topics and concentrate less on memorizing dates, writes CNN.
Officials say that teachers can still talk about these personalities and historical dates if they wish, but this will not be mandatory. According to the new plan, there will be no new textbooks, so the “cut out” dates and data will remain on paper.
The Board of Education understands that people will have different opinions about which individuals should be left in the curriculum and who should be removed.
Therefore, the Department of Education expressed a preliminary decision to “streamline” the 5,4 curriculum for millions of Texas students, acting on the recommendations of volunteer working groups. In November, a final decision will be made on this issue.
The working groups reviewed the historical data and evaluated them in the system on several factors, including various perspectives, regardless of the period of personal activity and their influence.
In this scoring system, Clinton received a score of five; Keller, an advocate for the rights of the deaf and blind, seven; and Goldwater, a presidential candidate in 1964, received no points at all.
Evangelist Billy Graham scored 4 points, and the working group recommended removing him from the curriculum, but in the final recommendation he was asked to be put back into the plan.
A preliminary vote drew public criticism.
"If Helen Keller was an important historical figure when I was in school (and she was), then she still is today," said Twitter user Chris Turner.
“Hillary Clinton is the first and only woman to become a presidential candidate from one of the major parties in US history,” said another social network user.
The school board rejected the advisory board’s recommendation that the word “heroic” not be used to describe the defenders of the Alamo against the Mexican army in 1836. But the board finally approved the new course on the study of Mexican-American relations.
