What you need to know about the policy of separating the children of migrants from their parents

Recently, the administration of President Donald Trump has strengthened migration policy and is separating children from parents detained at the border between the United States and Mexico. The Boston Globe described four points that are worth knowing.

Who is responsible for the separation of families?

President Trump and his administration. They mistakenly claim that they simply follow the law. But there is no law that requires families to be separated at the border. The divisions began after Attorney General Jeff Semmion announced that all illegal migrants would be prosecuted as criminals. When they are arrested, parents are separated from their children.

The White House interpreted the legal agreement from 1997 of the year and the bill on human trafficking from 2008 of the year supported by the two parties, which require the separation of families.

How many children suffered?

In the six weeks of the new rules, nearly 2 thousands of children were separated from their parents. US officials said the number of affected children could be higher and double in the future.

How bad are the conditions in which children are kept?

Reporters visited a facility in McAllen, Texas, and saw immigrant children in cages. In one cell were 20 children. Water bottles, potato bags, blankets and mattresses were scattered around. Officials working at the facility assured that each child is given adequate food, there is access to showers, clothes and medical care.

Democratic lawmakers also visited the New Jersey Detention Center, meeting with five men who were arrested at the border. The two had small children who were taken away and one was separated from his seven-year-old brother.

One of the men knelt and begged, the second wept while lawmakers talked to them, said New Jersey spokesman Frank Pallone.

Why did the Trump administration take this step?

Democrats say Trump is trying to use family separation policies to gain additional leverage in immigration law negotiations in Congress. In addition, Trump still wants Congress to finance the construction of a large border wall.

White House officials also suggested that such a harsh tactic reduces the flow of immigrants seeking to get into the United States.
