Why some regions of the United States will not survive without immigrants

Many cities in the Midwest are losing population due to the fact that people born there move to warmer southern and western states. However, their places are quickly occupied by immigrants, who often settle in the cities of the Midwest.

1. City Survival

Immigrants ensure the survival of more than 40 cities in the Midwest. They reduce population losses and rejuvenate aging labor.

2. Immigrants don't matter in big cities

Immigrants play an important role in the small cities of the Midwest, but in large cities that are losing population, the losses are so great that the arrival of new people cannot save the situation. For example, in 2016, Chicago lost more residents than any other major city in the United States, with 19 people leaving the city in one year.

Forecasts from demographers indicate that more and more immigrants in the coming years will move to smaller cities, where it is easier to adapt to life in the United States.

4. Reduction in the population of the Midwest

The number of newborns in the Midwest is constantly decreasing. Since 2000, the number of people born in about one third of the Midwest districts has decreased; in a third of cities this figure has grown by less than 7%. At the same time, in the country as a whole, the number of newborns on average increased by 14% over the same period of time.

5. Immigrants start looking for small cities.

In 2000, immigrants accounted for 7,8% of the Midwest's population; by 2015, their share had risen to 9,7%. The areas where the largest number of immigrants are moving are Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis.

But the immigrant population of small cities in the Midwest is also growing. Immigrants make up almost 10% of the population in cities such as Rockford, Illinois; Iowa City, Iowa; Bloomington, Indiana; Wichita, KS; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Grand Rapids, MI.

6. Immigrants have a positive effect on the economy.

The economy is becoming healthier in the cities of the Midwest, where immigrants settle. Tom McNamara, the Mayor of Rockford, Illinois, noted that foreign-born city dwellers more often than people born in the United States establish a business in the region, which has a positive effect on the economy.

7. Cities of the Midwest welcome immigrants

Most of the cities in the Midwest welcome and welcome immigrants. Residents of these regions are also very supportive of visitors.

8. Midwest prefers to abide by laws.

The Midwest welcomes immigrants, but generally wants them to immigrate legally. Residents of these regions come out in support of foreigners who want to start a new life, but still insist that it should be done, “I use the main door, not the back door”.
