Free hospitals and rights for 3 hours: Kazakh about medical immigration to New York
In the summer of 2014, 30-year-old Madi Kusbek came from Karaganda to the United States for the first time to receive medical services. I purchased insurance, underwent examination and surgery - a bone marrow transplant. A month later he returned to Kazakhstan. Six months later, the disease began to develop even more severely, and Madi came to the clinic where he underwent surgery. Since that time he has not left the United States.
About the city
The first time I was in New York was in 2014. For any person, this city is interesting. Coming from Karaganda, Astana and comparing Kazakhstan's skyscrapers with the skyscrapers of New York, it immediately becomes clear that these are two completely different worlds. The city is fascinating. Especially when you come as a tourist and you have no problems. When you start living in a city, all its disadvantages become immediately clear. He ceases to be so fabulous. You want to avoid the hustle and bustle.
Now I live in New Jersey. And, to get to New York, I need just 20 minutes. However, despite the proximity of the location to New York, life here is similar to our Kazakhstani measured.
About work
At the very beginning, when I arrived, I worked in a pizzeria, in delivery, as a painter in a construction company, as a jack of all trades in three hotels in electrical, carpentry works.
I have a legal education. I confirmed a Kazakh diploma in the States and received a certificate of assistant attorney. For a time, until September-October 2017, I worked on this position.
All this time, parallel treatment was carried out. While I had enough time to work, I did it. Now there is no time.
About people
If you are not used to fussy New York, he will eat you with giblets. The city does not allow to slow down. Either you get used to it and start living according to the rules of New York, or you do not get used to it and leave for a more or less calm city. I often saw people who came to New York to live and do something, and then they left for their cities or settled in the calm central states.
What is remarkable, our people maintain such a pace. 80% of Kazakhstanis are tough, they are hard to break. They are not afraid of anything and work at any rates. They are the ones who are ready to work 18-20 hours a day to earn a penny. This, it seems to me, Kazakhstanis are much stronger than residents of other countries.
About the features of life
In the US, everything is done for man. Of course, if we consider the prices that people see in Kazakhstan and here, then there will be surprise. Simple bread, if translated in tenge, can cost 1000 tenge.
But all salaries are calculated in such a way that no one has to deny something to himself. Clothes, food - everything is available. With a salary of about two thousand dollars a month, you can afford to rent a room, buy clothes, feed yourself, and save some part.
In terms of medicine, I can not say that local specialists are better at something. It seems to me that Kazakhstani experts are even stronger in many ways. However, in terms of technology, progress and ease of prescribing drugs, American medicine has gone ahead in several cases. By myself, I can say that it is impossible to get some experimental treatment methods in Kazakhstan.
However, in the USA, if doctors see that the disease is actively developing and traditional medicine cannot do anything, then they can take the patient's biomaterials and experimentally look for a medicine personally. Then they will research on the person, look, how the medicine works, to search for the necessary decision.
Insurance works well. Any hospital visit if you have good insurance will be free.
But getting sick in the USA is very expensive. One day spent in the hospital will cost about three thousand dollars. X-rays cost 120-140 dollars. Computed tomography costs about 800 dollars. I'm not talking about dentists, because they can be called a kind of separate caste. There are few types of insurance that can cover all types of treatment.
In terms of bureaucracy, everything is simple. As soon as a person wants to get, for example, a driver's license, he turns into just one window.
They give you a list of documents that you have to bring, you carry them there, they check your hearing, sight, and take a practical test. Confirmation you bring in the same window. And if everything is in order, then the rights are printed there. It all takes about two to three hours. In Kazakhstan, this process took me a month.
In the States, no one will sacrifice a career for the sake of extra money. They all know that by doing a good job, they will get paid. However, they are aware of their responsibilities. Every person, whether it be an immigrant, an illegal migrant, if he pays taxes, can go to a civil servant, a fireman, a policeman, a doctor and say that he should do the work properly and they will understand.
About what New York taught
At that time, when I arrived in New York, I was a monolith man who grew up in a different culture and had certain values.
The way girls dress, or the way sexual minorities show their relationships, sometimes scares or shocks. But I note that the United States makes you tolerant. Most say that this is normal, and you feel that this is normal. This will happen in any society. However, for me, as a person who grew up in a normal family with mom and dad, this remains a shock.
About plans
About three years ago I wanted to stay in the USA. But now I can not say that I will stay. I am Kazakh and born on another land. All the experience and all the knowledge that I get here, I would like to apply at home. Needed where was born. And let the treatment take five years, ten years, as soon as I am cured, I will return to Kazakhstan.
