Anti-boycott bill Israel gathers support for US lawmakers

The 45 senators and the 237 congressmen of the United States supported a bill punishing those who boycott Israel.
The so-called “Israel Anti-Boycott Act” proposes to fine up to $ 250 000 to any US citizen “engaged in interstate or foreign trade” that supports the boycott of Israeli goods and services.
The United States has long defended Israel in territorial disputes in the Middle East, even when the Israeli military seized areas assigned to Palestinians under international law. The US position is contrary to the position of the United Nations, which argues that the Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory do not have "legal force" and "constitute a gross violation of international law."
In their new legislation, members of Congress argue that the UN intends to refuse assistance and stop trade with settlements in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Golan Heights. The US law against the boycott of Israel is designed to punish any American who supports the same measures as the UN.
However, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) believes the bill is unconstitutional because it would “impose civil and criminal penalties on individuals solely because of their political beliefs about Israel and its policies. The bill would penalize businesses and individuals based solely on their views,” the organization said in a letter sent to congressmen and senators.
