38-year-old Ukrainian became the senator of the state of Indiana
Ukrainian-American Victoria Spartz was elected to the Indiana State Senate. In the Senate, she will replace 72-year-old Luke Kenley, who is retiring, reports "Voice of America«.
Spartz defeated six other candidates, including Dan Schmidt, who previously worked with former Governor Mike Pence, and Megan Wiles, President of the Council of the City of Noblesville, whose candidacy was supported by Senator Luke Kenley.
“When Victoria Spartz took the floor to decide who would fill Senator Luke Kinley's seat, she had a thick accent, but her passion for American politics was even stronger,” writes WTHR.com.
“I’ll tell you about my accent,” Victoria said, speaking to members of the 93rd precinct committee. — When I made an order at McDonald's, a young girl was very surprised and said: “It seems like you have an accent.” I've been here 17 years and yes, I have an accent."
Victoria moved to the US 17 years ago. She received her master's degree in professional accounting from Indiana University and now teaches there. Spartz plans to leave this position to avoid conflict of interest. She has worked in business and government agencies, including the position of Chief Financial Officer of the Indiana Attorney Services. Spartz is the chairman of the Republican Party of Hamilton County, local media reported.
“I am confident that Senator Victoria Spartz will quickly get up to speed and become a valuable part of the State Senate,” said Kyle Gupfer, Indiana Republican Party Chairman.
Senator Kenley does not know Spartz personally, but wished her success in office. “Victoria has an excellent resume and appears to be a very capable person who has accomplished a lot,” he said, according to Indystar.
