October 2 59, a Washington Post newspaper columnist, Jamal Hashoghgi entered the consulate building of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul. The man wanted to divorce his wife, who lives in Saudi Arabia, in order to marry 36-year-old Turkish woman Hatice Cengiz. According to Islamic law, a husband can divorce his wife simply by stating his intention. However, for an official marriage in Turkey, Hashoggi needed to document his own decision and obtain a divorce certificate.

This was Khashoggi’s second visit to the consulate regarding the divorce. A few days before, he had been told that some of his documents were not in order. The journalist arrived at the consulate accompanied by the bride. In 13: 14, he entered the diplomatic mission, leaving Cengiz his smartphone, since the rules of the consulate forbid bringing phones. He told the bride to turn to the Turkish authorities if he was not more than four hours. In 17: 00, the consulate was closed, before closing the woman tried to clarify the situation. At the consulate, she was informed that Khashoggi had left.

The journalist was not announced anywhere. Friends tried in vain to find him before midnight. His friend Turan Kislakki, who was also expecting Khashoggi to return from a consulate nearby, said he was 100% sure that the journalist had not left the building.

His colleagues sounded the alarm. The same evening, the Washington Post editorial staff expressed concern about the disappearance of the journalist. The publication noted that, despite the fact that Saudi Arabia announced reforms in the kingdom, “the disturbing events in the community of activists inside the country say something completely different.” From May to August, at least 15 human rights defenders were arrested in the state. Among them were XuNumx-year-old Lujina Al-Khatlula, who tried to fight the ban on women driving a car. Khashoggi criticized the arrest of activists, but praised the actions of the King of Saudi Arabia, who in June 29 had lifted the ban on female driving, which had been in effect for 2018 years.

A week after the disappearance of Khashoggi, his colleagues from The Washington Post announced that they had obtained evidence of the columnist’s murder right within the walls of a Saudi diplomatic mission. Journalists said that the Turkish authorities have audio and video recordings confirming the murder. They stated that the records indicate that they had dealt with Khashoggi right in the consulate: they could hear the man being interrogated in Arabic and then tortured and killed. According to newspaper sources, the content of the materials proves Saudi Arabia’s direct involvement in the murder of Khashoggi. It was noted that Turkey did not publish these materials, fearing accusations of spying on foreign nationals in the country.

The Turkish authorities are convinced that as soon as Khashoggi crossed the threshold of the consulate, he was detained, interrogated, severely tortured and killed right on the territory of the mission. The investigation suggests that the journalist’s body was dismembered with a medical saw. Al Jazeera reported that it took seven minutes.

Saudi crown prince may be involved in the execution of a journalist

At the request of the President of Turkey to reveal the fate of the journalist, the Crown Prince of the Saudi kingdom, Mohammed bin Salman, invited the Turkish authorities to inspect the consulate. The Turkish investigation team and representatives of the prosecutor’s office searched the territory of the consulate general for nine hours. A senior source from the Associated Press assured that the evidence supporting the murder was found, but did not specify which ones. It is known that the police took a number of tests - in particular, soil samples from the consulate’s garden.

The Turkish investigation believes that the prince in this story is not a random person. Investigators point out that on the day a journalist visited a consulate in Istanbul, 15 high-ranking Saudi Arabian subjects flew to two private sides. Among them were people who held military and government posts, representatives of special services and intelligence. It is their Turkey that suspects in the massacre of Hashoggy. Saudis booked hotel rooms near the consulate for three days, but 13 of them flew two private planes in the evening of the same day, and the other two - in the morning of October October 3. After the murder and dismemberment, they had a full dinner on the territory of the consulate, according to a source in the General Prosecutor's Office of Istanbul.

Of the 15 suspects (their names and photos were published by the Turkish media), seven are linked to Mohammed bin Salman, the investigation found out. In particular, the prince’s entourage has repeatedly seen the suspect, Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, who has worked at the Saudi Embassy in London since 2007. The newspaper The New York Times showed it in pictures taken during the prince's business trips to France, Spain, and the United States. Three more suspects are related to the protection of the Crown Prince, they, in particular, accompanied bin Salman in the UK, where in March 2018, he met with Queen Elizabeth. Forensic medical expert Salah Muhammad al-Tubaigi (Tubaiji), who was named head of the forensic examination in the security department of Saudi Arabia, is also suspected of complicity in the murder of a journalist. It was he who, according to media sources in the investigative bodies, dismembered the body of a journalist. According to the source, Tubaigi began to cut Khasoggi while he was still alive. To drown out the cries of the victim, he put on headphones with loud music and advised those around him to do the same.

The Middle East Eye has at its disposal a document from the Saudi Ministry of the Interior, which indicates the positions of the suspects, their dates of birth, passport details and telephone numbers, as well as foreign trips in which they accompanied bin Salman. All of them are members of the special security forces of the crowned prince. The publication did not publish the document in the interests of the security of their sources. At the same time, the state television network of Saudi Arabia Al Arabia called the suspects tourists, who were victims of false accusations.
