New Yorker rescuing a Jewish boy, left homeless

It was a hectic few weeks for Valeski Mendez. November resident of Queens 29 intervened in a violent attack by a group of teenagers on a Jewish boy 16-year-old, using a broomstick to scare off the attackers.

After that, last week, city checker Scott Stringer handed the woman a gratitude from the city “For unprecedented bravery and disinterested actions against hatred and anti-Semitism,” writes Gothamist.

In addition, Mendez said that many New Yorkers came to her with offers of money and clothes for her two children.

“I turned down the offers. Because I don’t think it’s right,” the woman said.

She admitted that the thought of gaining material benefits from this incident made her feel uncomfortable.

What makes this incident even more unique is the fact that Mendez has no work. Her unemployment benefits have recently ended. And her landlord raised the rent for an apartment in Queens from 1300 to 2000 dollars. Thus, she and her sons are forced to move from the apartment in which they lived for 14 years. Currently, she sent her belongings to the locker and will live with friends.

“I hope things get better by 2019. We are working on this,” the woman noted.

She continues to send her resume to potential employers. She has a degree from La Guardia College. Ideally, Mendez said, she would go to work at school, and believed that her bilingual skills would help her.

After an attack on a Jewish teenager, 18-year-old Jonathan Torres and another 17-year-old boy, whose name was not called, were arrested. They were charged with assault of the first degree. A spokesman for the Queens District Attorney stated that the investigation was ongoing and that the defendants would be brought to trial on January 16.

Mendes said that in fact many more people participated in the attack, and expressed surprise at the fact that the police did not interrogate her, despite the fact that she was a direct witness to the incident. Most of all, she was shocked by the reaction of other witnesses who did not help the victim, did not call the police, but simply filmed the incident on video.
