New Yorkers will get $ 115 discount on water and sewage bill

Thousands of low-income New Yorkers will receive a subsidy to pay their water and sewer bills.

Mayor Bill De Blasio announced that more 53 000 families across New York will receive an automatic subsidy of $ 115 to their next water and sewer bill.

“We are reducing rates directly for low-income families and senior citizens across the city,” Blasio said in a statement.

Those families whose total income is $ 37 399 can count on the subsidy.

The New York State Water Board also authorized an increase in the number of subsidies by approximately 12 000 retirees in this fiscal year.

Here are how many families in each district can count on payment:

• Bronx: 4 717
• Brooklyn: 16 659
• Manhattan: 101
• Queens: 23 149
• Staten Island: 8 451.

New housing payments of $ 250 will begin next year for several multi-family buildings. The city will allocate $ 10 million to 40 thousand units.

Minority leader Stephen Matteo said that more needs to be done to ease the financial burden for homeowners, “but this $ 115 loan will certainly help.”

Councilor Joseph Borelli said: “This loan is a step in the right direction.”

Last year, De Blasio tried to provide a $ 183 discount on water and sewer bills for 12 500 homeowners throughout the city. In 2016, the program was expanded to include low-income retirees and homeowners with disabilities.

But one-time subsidies were blocked by the judge after a group of landlords and the Association for the stabilization of rent sued the city.

A spokesman for De Blasio said that $ 115 grants and other payments announced on Friday are not related to the ongoing litigation.
