In California, sentenced to prison a woman sheltering illegal immigrants

Neighbors noticed suspicious movements near the home of Dania Olivero, a 51-year-old San Diego resident. When police arrived to inspect her property in November, Olivero explained that she had simply invited friends over for a beer. Police officers noticed an inconsistency in the words of the hostess of the house: none of the “guests” drank, and cans of beer had just been taken out of the refrigerator.

It turned out that Denmark Olivero was running a house for the “smuggling” of illegal migrants. 44 people were found in her premises. Almost all are from Mexico, 2 are from Guatemala. According to some accounts, some of the illegal immigrants were locked in a shed in the backyard. There was no light or ventilation, and there was no latrine; instead, illegal migrants used a bucket.

Federal services indicted Olivero for harboring and hiding illegal migrants. On May 4, a US District Court judge sentenced Olivero to 3 years and 1 a month in prison. She is Cuban, living in the US legally.

After the arrest, Olivero told border patrol agents that she had been involved in harboring immigrants since 2014. Olivero first took up this business at the request of a certain Juan, whom she met in a bar. In some cases, she was paid $ 50 for each person she kept in her home. At the same time, illegal migrants themselves paid $ 5000-8500 for the opportunity to get into the United States.

According to lawyer Olivero, the shelter of illegal immigrants was an act of despair on the part of a woman. This allowed her to make ends meet. She worked at odd jobs, raised 2 children and ate food stamps.

“I truly have not had an easy life,” Olivero wrote in a letter to the judge. The latter called the large number of illegal migrants in the house and the conditions of their detention aggravating circumstances.
