After being bitten by a woman flu symptoms developed, she was taken to a hospital, where doctors discovered Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacteria in her blood, which are found in the saliva of dogs and cats. Two days later, Larson died.
“I feel like I was robbed. I lost my best friend,” said her heartbroken husband Dan Larson.
The death of a woman came just a few weeks after 48-year-old Greg Manteuffel from West Bend (WI) infected by the same bacteria after being licked by a dog. Doctors managed to save his life, but the man lost all his limbs - they had to be amputated to normalize his blood pressure, which had dropped to a critical level due to bacteria.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the contact of people with the bacteria Capnocytophaga canimorsus rarely leads to the development of the disease. The risk group includes people older than 40 years, as well as people suffering from alcoholism and having a weakened immune system.
“I was told that this disease was so rare that my wife was just as likely to be struck by lightning four times and survive, or to win the lottery twice,” explained Dan Larson.
