Russian detained in New York officially accused of espionage
The Prosecutor's Office of the Southern District of New York filed a formal accusation against Yuggeny Buryakov, a citizen of the Russian Federation, reports on Tuesday, February 10, TASS, citing the press service of the department. The Russian is charged with "working in the United States as an agent of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) under the unofficial cover."
Two more Russians, Igor Sporyshev and Victor the like, currently outside the US, are charged in absentia.
Scheduled for Monday, February 9, the trial of the Buryakov case did not take place for unknown reasons. As expected, a request for an adjournment of a Russian official was to be made at these hearings.
US authorities detained Evgeny Buryakov 26 January. 39-year-old deputy representative of Vnesheconombank was suspected of espionage. 40-year-old Igor Sporyshev and 27-year-old Viktor Similar, according to the FBI, formed a single espionage group with Buryakov.
According to American intelligence, three Russians collected information on the development of alternative energy sources, as well as the US administration’s preparation of economic sanctions against Russian banks.
