Japan has found 7000 islands, the existence of which was not known before: now it will have twice as many of them
Geographers say the number of islands in Japan is expected to more than double after they are recounted. The edition told in more detail USA Today.
A total of 7000 more islands that Japan did not know existed have been discovered through digital mapping by Japan's Geospatial Information Administration (GSI). The agency used state-of-the-art technology to conduct the recount, with cross-references to past aerial photographs.
The discovery of new territories is expected to increase the number of islands in the country, according to a 1987 Japan Coast Guard study, from 6 to 852.

The final figure is subject to change as Japan's Geospatial Information Administration completes a report expected to be released in April.
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea defines an island as "a naturally formed piece of land surrounded by water that is above the water at high tide".
Will it change the size of Japan
While the new figure reflects advances in surveying technology, it did not change the total area of land held by Japan.

The total size of a country's territory is calculated using the same method regardless of the islands listed. Therefore, the new islands do not affect it in any way, but are already located on the territory of the country.
The government used data from a 1987 Japanese Coast Guard study. The newly mapped islands, which are at least 330 feet (100 m) in circumference, could lead to corrections in the educational literature, the publication said.
