Manhattan's Acting Attorney Audrey Strauss called it "eerily similar to the horrific 11/2001 attacks."

Prosecutors said Abdullah began planning an attack in 2016 under the leadership of the Al-Shabaab commander, who was also involved in planning the deadly 2019 attack on a hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

The US State Department has designated the Somali-based militant group Al-Shabaab, a subsidiary of al-Qaeda, as a foreign terrorist organization.
