The beach in New York was closed due to the large number of syringes and needles found on the shore
East Atlantic Beach, Nassau County, New York, was closed after authorities discovered a lot of medical needles being washed ashore between Ohio Avenue and Clayton Avenue, writes News12.
Law enforcement officers from Nassau County reported that they had found 50-60 medical needles and 35 syringes on the beach. These items were scattered around the beach.
The beach was closed for a day until the authorities could assess the condition of the coast after two tides.
The beach was checked by police, health department, Hempstead Bay Constables, DEC Group. Officials noted that the situation could have been worse, but the rescuers were able to collect the beached materials.
Officials ask people to tell them if they find any medical supplies on the beach.
Representatives of the city of Hempstead reported that they also closed Nickerson Beach and Malibu Beach until further notice.
