'Taste familiar from childhood': how coffee in the Carpathian region conquers Los Angeles

Ukrainians founded a coffee manufactory in the most “star” city in the USA, because they are sure that such a unique coffee taste cannot be found in their homeland, in California or throughout America.

“We buy grains from Colombia in this form,” says the owner of the manufactory, taking a metal scoop with green grains from a bag. “There’s a joke that the best heroin and the best coffee come from Colombia.”

He pours grain into the car. While the drying process is underway, Anatoly talks about how long he was searching for a taste that would resemble the one in his homeland. I read stories, magazines, watched videos.

“In fact, no one ever reveals their secret. Our recipe was obtained experimentally. Using flavor nuances, we came to the taste that was familiar to me since childhood,” says Anatoly.

To achieve European flavor, roasting must be of medium stage. It is also called Viennese roasting. Anatoly closely monitors the temperature and shows how coffee beans get a beautiful shade of cinnamon.

It is the average roast that makes this coffee special in the USA. According to Anatoly, in America, as a rule, they sell roasted coffee beans. Therefore, coffee loses the aroma to which Ukrainians are accustomed.

Next, you need to pack coffee. At this stage, his workers help Anatoly.

“Now we will pack it into bags,” says Dmitry Maslov, demonstrating the process. — It’s a completely different taste, many people like it. Those who have tried our coffee like it better than what they drank before.”

This is how the new Los Angeles brand Lacroi (“Lacroix”), originally from Transcarpathia, appeared. The ground coffee should sit for a day to acquire the special taste of light sourness and chocolate.

Anatoly says that he was always a fan of coffee, but he didn’t manage to realize his dream at once. He has been living in America for eight years now and has been collecting funds all these years. To expand the business, he attracted a partner to work in the coffee manufactory, who offered to produce honey Transcarpathian spin.

“Given the specifics of the coffee product and market, we can safely say that there is almost no coffee like ours,” says Anatoly.

Now Lacroi are negotiating with American supermarkets, and the next step Dmitry will be opening a cafe in Los Angeles.
