In Turkey, there was a terrorist attack
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Turkey reported that at least 27 people were killed and about a hundred injured in the attack in the south of the country. The explosion occurred in the city Suruc, located near the Syrian border.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkey does not exclude that the number of victims may increase. The authorities believe that the attack is directed against the unity of Turkey, and urge the population to remain calm.
Suruç is located near the Syrian city of Kobani, in which intense fighting took place between Kurdish forces and Islamic State militants. The city has a large camp of Syrian refugees fleeing Turkey from violence in their country.
According to Reuters, an explosion also occurred in Kobani, although the cause of this explosion is not yet clear. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was a car bomb attack targeting Kurdish forces. At the same time, Kurdish officials claim that the explosion was part of an operation to destroy ammunition left behind by the Islamic State.
Backed by a US-led coalition, the Kurdish military retook control of Kobane earlier this year and has since gradually reclaimed other border areas from the Islamic State. Earlier this month, Kurdish forces ousted Islamic State militants from Kobane after the jihadists captured several city areas after killing dozens of civilians.
