Fishing vessel sank in Russia: 17 people are missing

In the Barents Sea near the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, the Russian ship Onega capsized and sank, with 19 fishermen on board. Two of them were saved, 17 people are considered missing. According to emergency services, they died, since the sea temperature is extremely low. The details of the incident were shared by the publication with the BBC.

There were reports that the body of one deceased sailor was found, but, as the Ministry of Emergency Situations said, this information has not yet been confirmed.

Information about the incident with the ship "Onega" appeared on Monday, December 28.

“The vessel belongs to a private person and is registered in Murmansk. After the crash, the crew issued several distress signals - in automatic and manual modes,” the source said.

The wreck took place in the Barents Sea, about 300 nautical miles from Murmansk. The rescued crew members were in wetsuits, the captain was not among them. The Investigative Committee on Transport opened a criminal case on violation of traffic safety rules and the operation of sea and water transport.

The rescued sailors, according to preliminary data, feel satisfactory, a representative of the emergency services told RIA Novosti. On board were residents of four regions of Russia - 16 residents of the Murmansk region and one person each from Arkhangelsk, Kursk and Rostov regions.

At the time of the ship's wreck in the Barents Sea, a hurricane wind at a speed of up to 32 meters per second, a blizzard was registered, and the air temperature reached -12 degrees, leading specialist of the Phobos weather center Evgeny Tishkovets told RIA Novosti.

According to preliminary information, the vessel sank due to a roll while pulling a fishing trawl, because of which the vessel scooped up water and sank to the bottom, Alexander Bakhtin, First Deputy Head of the Emergency Department of the Arkhangelsk Region, told reporters.

“This version is currently the most likely, but again all the reasons and conditions will need to be assessed by specialists,” Bakhtin said. Initially, the cause of the ship's sinking was considered to be icing.

Aviation of the Northern Fleet is ready to fly to the area of ​​the search for the sunken ship, but so far the weather does not allow it.

“The Northern Fleet aviation is on standby; at the moment, the flight is complicated by short daylight hours and unfavorable weather conditions. The height of the waves at the site reaches 4 m, the air temperature is about -20 degrees,” the press service of the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.

According to the website of the Union of Fishery Industrialists of the North, the fishing vessel "Onega" belongs to the company "Variant RPF" JSC (Murmansk). The shipowner is the fishing collective farm named after Kalinin in the Arkhangelsk region, said Andrey Zaika, chairman of the Union of Fishing Collective Farms of the Arkhangelsk Region.

According to the owner of the vessel, before going to sea, all systems were fully operational, all necessary procedures and approvals were followed.
