In Russia, thinking about disconnecting from the global Internet

Advisor to the President of Russia on the development of the Internet, German Klimenko, said that Russia is technically ready to disconnect from the global Internet.

This politician said in an interview with the channel NTV.ru.

“If tomorrow our colleagues disconnect us from the switch, I don’t know if it will be painless, it promises to be painless. I am sure that will not be painless. Somewhere someone has something turned off. It will probably turn out that someone stored their data abroad, although there is an order to keep it here. Someone hosted their domains abroad. Therefore, they will probably experience some difficulties. But in itself there are no contraindications to the hardware and software that we live well, normally and efficiently, even if we are declared such a war as the Crimean isolation, ”explained Klimenko.

He stressed that in Russia, by presidential decree, the own segment of the Internet, created specifically for officials, is already operating, which will simplify the functioning of government bodies in the event of a disconnection from the global Internet.

“We have all the officials, all the state institutions are behind such a big“ Chinese firewall ”. Things that scare us all. Well, it seems everyone is alive, ”the politician said.

Klimenko recalled that all Russian departments and ministries had to switch to Russian software several years ago - the corresponding order was issued in the 2010 year. However, the prescription of the Russian government was fulfilled by only one authority - the Federal Bailiff Service.

In an interview, the official also touched on the topic of cybersecurity and computer literacy of Russians.

According to Klimenko, there are currently about 20 million desktop computers in Moscow, of which 20-30% is infected with viruses.

“Computer literacy must be promoted, but objectively the case is left to chance,” the presidential adviser admitted.

In 2018-2020, many experts predict a massive deployment of fifth-generation networks - 5G, but, according to Klimenko, this technology and the blockchain in Russia "as it were, but at the same time there are none."

Klimenko expressed the hope that Russia will sooner or later “reach for 5G,” adding that this technology sounds too fantastic for now.

“Or perhaps, as is usually the case, we will discover something else along the way, and some other more interesting technology will be hidden under the 5G brand,” he suggested.

The politician noted that all the difficulties of introducing promising technologies in Russia lie in the fact that historically there is a very close intersection of the state and business in the country. As a result, for the successful implementation of the Digital Economy program, the state will have to assume an unusual function - to make concessions.
