New York has a record influx of unaccompanied migrant children

Catholic charities in New York said they plan to serve about 8000 unaccompanied migrant children for a year. According to their data, the number of such children who came from the southern border of the country has increased dramatically in recent months.

Since October, the Catholic charity organization of the Archdiocese of New York has served more 3000 unaccompanied migrant children, whose number is likely to reach roughly 8000 by October this year, said Mario Russell, director of the organization for immigrant and refugee services, Patch.com.

According to Russell, this is the maximum figure in the history of a non-profit organization, which in recent years has typically served from 2000 to 4000 children.

There has been an influx since last summer, the city adopted about 400 children separated from their parents on the southern border of the United States as a result of the Trump administration’s "zero tolerance" policy regarding illegal border crossings.

Catholic Charities says nearly all of those children have since been reunited with their parents. But others continue to arrive - 95% from the so-called Northern Triangle countries: Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

Catholic organizations intend to send representatives to these Central American countries at the end of April to learn more about what makes people flee to the United States. A delegation of seven will set out on April 22.

“If we knew all the answers, we wouldn’t go,” said Kevin Sullivan, executive director of Catholic Charities. “We know global problems, but we are going to study something that might surprise us.” "Hopefully what we learn can influence what we do here and how we can help families reunite."

Catholic charities meet with all children who are transferred to the metropolitan area from the border after checking the immigration and customs services or the US Border Guard. According to Russell, those who end up in New York usually wait 2-4 weeks before reuniting with a family member in that city or elsewhere.

“They can go to mom and dad in Seattle. They might go to their godfather in Chicago or their brother in Los Angeles,” Russell said. “So they don’t all necessarily stay here.”

Changes in the Federal Refugees Resettlement Authority resulted in more children being sent to New York. Therefore, the flow of unaccompanied migrant children is not necessarily associated with an increase in the number of migrants in general, Russell says.

If adults are detained, migrant children could still be separated from their parents because ICE may believe the parent is a criminal, a drug addict or a safety risk, Russell said. But he says those children who come with their families face the same problems as those who arrive unaccompanied.

“(It’s) the same story, the same problems, the same threats, the same insecurity, the same persecution and the same enforced poverty,” Russell said.
