A man accidentally threw away $ 23 000: the story of their searches is worthy of an adaptation
Workers at the sorting line at the Recology Processing Plant in Humboldt County are used to the unusual things that customers throw away. But they will remember this incident for a long time.
On Friday, 3 August, one attentive employee discovered a shoe box crammed with cash dollars. It contained $ 23 000. The owner accidentally threw it away.
“We process quite a lot of material every day, so the chances of finding something are not much better than a needle in a haystack,” said Linda Wise, general manager of the Samoa Resource Recovery Center, which is run by Recology.
The story began on Thursday, 1 August, when a man from Ashland, Oregon, threw a box of his savings into a trash can near his home. Later that day, he realized his mistake, but the bin was already empty, and its contents were sent to California for recycling.
In horror, he contacted Recology, which provides garbage collection services to more than 1 million homes and businesses in Washington, Oregon and California.
Several times a week, lorries with recycling material travel from Ashland to the Recology plant in Samoa. The facility sorts trash faster and cleaner than others, said Brian Sollom, operations manager for three facilities in Humboldt County.
Late in the evening of 1 August, one of the trucks arrived in Samoa with bags full of recyclables from Oregon.

Wise said that most were sorted that night, with the exception of a few packages that left the morning shift.
The workers were told to look for a shoe box in which there were savings, but Wise hardly hoped to find her.
“But then the box came and came down the sorting line and we all couldn’t get enough of it,” she said.
Sollom said video from the processing plant showed the money - $22 - somehow remaining in the box, traveling from Ashland to Humboldt.
“They only fell out of the box after it hit the sorting line,” Sollom said.
“We were able to recover all but $320,” he added.

Sollom gets calls all the time from clients looking for lost treasures: a mother whose son accidentally threw away something precious, or an antiques collector who mistakenly threw away an item he adored. In many cases, the most Sollom can offer people is an apology.
The man who lost the money was thrilled when Wise called him with good news.
She said that for her team it was an important moment that allowed someone to help.
“Everyone on the triage line this morning was beaming,” she said. “Now this gentleman is going to have a great weekend.”
