Scammers are sending chain letters on Facebook

В Facebook spreads a viral post that offers to take part in the action 'holiday gift exchange'and send someone a gift that costs from $ 10. This is a fraud, writes Los Angeles Times.

Some posts offer to send a bottle of wine or a book. The essence of the promotion is that you send a gift to someone, and then hundreds of gifts begin to arrive in your inbox. This action sounds harmless, but it is illegal.

The US Postal Inspection Service calls this action a typical example of “letters of happiness,” only you are asked to send not money, but gifts.

“A chain letter is a get-rich-quick scheme where you are promised that if you take part, your inbox will soon be filled with cash. You are promised that you will earn thousands of dollars every month if you follow the detailed instructions in the letter. Such promotions are illegal if you are asked to make a financial investment,” the service’s website says.

According to federal law, article 1302 on postal lotteries, such actions are criminalized up to 2's.

In addition, this action is impossible from the point of view of mathematical laws. If each participant invites 6 people, and those in turn invite more 6 people, then after 11 days, all US residents would be participants in the action.

Also, accepting the terms of the promotion, there is a problem of confidentiality. You are asked to provide a name and postal address. You do not know in whose hands this information will be.

The postal service is asked to be careful and avoid participating in any promotions that are similar to "letters of happiness."
